Tar Heel

We traveled to Chapel Hill, NC for graduation on Saturday, May 12th. The hooding ceremony was held in the Dean Smith Center, where the basketball team plays. As you can see in the photos, the school color of “Carolina blue” is very prominent. There were probably a couple hundred PhD candidates, and most had an advisor with them, so there were almost as many people seated on the floor as there were guests in the bleachers.

In the photo below I’m walking to the stairs after being hooded by my advisor, who is walking right behind me. (The “hood” is the velvet sash that goes around the neck and hangs down the back.)

After graduation we had lunch in Chapel Hill and then drove back to D.C. We stopped for a couple hours in Richmond, VA to break up the drive.

The next day was Mother’s Day and we celebrated by taking a walk to the park. We put Louis in the swing again to take some more pictures of him having fun.

  1. Congrats Dr. Russell! And Louis in a tie? That is so cute I can't stand it. He is the cutest little guy I've ever seen.
